WHAT IS A MAMMOGRAM?

A mammogram is a simple and safe examination utilizing x-rays to produce multiple images of the breasts.

WHY IS MAMMOGRAPHY USED?

Mammography is a tool used by physicians for various reasons:

PROCEDURE PREPARATIONS

It is advised that you not schedule a mammogram during your menstrual cycle. The breasts are typically more tender and/or swollen during menstruation which could limit the quality of your mammogram or cause you pain. Please do not wear deodorant or powder into the exam room. These particles will show up on your mammogram image and can cause a false reading. You will be asked to disrobe from the waist up, thus pants, shorts or skirts are recommended the day of your exam.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING THE EXAM?

The technologist will ask you to relax so that the breasts can be properly positioned. The breasts are compressed during the examination in order to separate the breast tissue. This can be slightly uncomfortable, but only for a brief period of time. Initially the breasts are imaged in two different positions. The radiologist will determine if additional views are necessary.

HOW LONG WILL THE EXAM TAKE?

Typically the procedure will take twenty to thirty minutes. You will be asked to arrive thirty minutes early prior to your scheduled exam time to complete necessary paperwork.

MAMMOGRAPHY RESULTS

Once your exam is complete, our highly skilled licensed technologists will produce films for a radiologist to review. The radiologist will study your results and produce a report, which then is forwarded to your physician.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATES
